                                                                      Summer Term 2 2017

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely holiday.

This half term our topic is Journeys and Adventure. We will be going on our own class journey and adventure to 'Harewood House and Bird Garden' on Thursday 22nd June. We will be doing a senses workshop in the grounds of Harewood House as well as exploring the rest of the grounds. Fingers crossed for a lovely sunny day!

We will be selling milkshakes to help towards the cost of the visit at break from Monday 12th June until Friday 16th June. Milkshakes will be 50p.

Year 1 children and some year 2 children will have the phonics screening check in the week commencing 12.6.17. A really useful website which explains what the phonics screening involves is:

In English this half term, we will be focussing initially on the book 'Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett'. Throughout the term we will be orally learning the story. Writing character descriptions and writing postcards and letters.

We will continue to focus on our writing skills:

  • Letter formation using cursive writing.
  • Capital letters and full stops.
  • Finger spaces between words.
  • Applying our phonic knowledge.
  • Writing sentences using the 'Think it, say it, write it, check it' method.

The Continuous Provision also provides many opportunities for reading, writing as well as developing speaking and listening skills. Our role play area will be a 'Post Office' where children will be looking at writing lists, making designs, writing labels, writing letters and postcards.

Thank you to parents who are continually supporting their children with reading and spellings, it really does make a huge difference.

In Maths we will be focussing on:

Addition and subtraction.

Multiplication and division

Writing numerals correctly.

We will re visit number bonds to 20, counting on and back from any number.

Maths Passport skills (see your child's planner)

The children will continue to gain more experience of practical addition and subtraction and will be writing numbers using different materials. We will continue to solve problems involving counting, adding and subtracting in the context of numbers, measures and money.

Please look at the learn by heart statements in your child's planner and practise these with them regularly as these are facts that your children need to know to allow them to solve problems quickly and easily.

This half term we will be looking at animals and habitats as well as investigating our 5 senses. We will look at naming and identifying a variety of common animals including, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Our PE lessons will be on a Tuesday and Friday. We will be working with a PE coach on Tuesday and then practising our new skills on Friday. Please could you make sure that your child's PE kit is in school on these days and that it is clearly labelled with their name. We had a lot of children without a full PE kit last 1/2 term please can you check that your child has the correct kit.

P.E this half term is Athletics - children will be using the outdoor area where possible to partake in P.E. Please could you ensure your child has an appropriate outdoor P.E kit for the colder weather as well as their indoor P.E kit.  (Please see your child's planner for the recommended outdoor P.E kit)

We will aim to listen to the children read and change their books on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday but please make sure children have their reading books with them every day. If you need any help with ideas and techniques for how best to support your child with reading at home please don't hesitate to ask. Please record that you have heard your children read in their planner and let us know of anything amazing that your child does or says about their books!

Homework will be spellings based as it is important to help your children become more fluent in reading and writing. Please check your childs planner for the day they have their spellings checked and given on. We also ask that you are supporting your child to practise their learn by heart targets for maths.

Celebration Assembly

Each week we select one or two children who we feel deserve recognition for their efforts in class. These children are rewarded with a special mention in our Friday assembly where they are presented with a certificate. We will send a letter home early in the week if your child is receiving a special mention. Please check your child's reading bag regularly for any letters. We will try and inform you in person where possible and I know the children are keen to tell you if they receive one of these letters! They are always extremely proud to receive these and the occasion is made all the more special if parents and family are able to attend.

Any other business!

At the end of the school day, if you will not be collecting your child personally, please inform the class teacher or the school office of the named adult who will be collecting your child. Children will not be allowed to go without prior notification. This is an important safety issue and is in place to keep all our children safe. Thank you for your co-operation.

There are still a number of children who bring a packed lunch to school - have they tried the range of meals and sandwiches provided by school? All Year 1 children are entitled to a free school meal!

There are some useful websites which we use to provide children with resources to support their learning.  We also use interactive websites, particularly in maths and phonics to help children practise skills they have learnt.  Here are links to some that are popular:
